Binary cancer risk

High levels of iron in the blood, may combine with high levels of very low density (VLDL) lipoprotein cholesterol to increase the risk of cancer, say researchers in the US. Dr Arch Mainous III and a colleague at the Medical University of South Carolina write in the American Journal of Epidemiology that iron and lipids can create oxidative stress, which has a role in the development of cancer. Their research indicates that elevated iron increases the risk of developing cancer by 66 per cent; high VLDL by 54 per cent; and the combination by 168 per cent.
