Breastfeeding ?may help eye development?

29 Jun 2005

Scientists in Singapore say children who are breastfed are about fifty per cent less likely than others to be short sighted. Dr Saw Seang Mei, of the National University of Singapore, says docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) in breast milk is important in the development of photoreceptor cells in the retina, which play a major role in whether children develop myopia. The study, led by the Singapore Eye Research Institute, shows that the risk of myopia in a child who was breastfed is 0.6 times that of child that was not, even after taking other factors into account.
