The European Food Safety Authority has approved three more genetically modified types of maize, in its first assessment of hybrid strains combining different traits in one plant. The three hybrids, all manufactured by US firm Monsanto, are intended for use in food and animal feed, as well as in industrial processing, but not for growing. In a statement the EFSA says, “The panel considered that the information available is sufficient to come to a conclusion and that the GM maize hybrids … will not have adverse effects on human or animal health or on the environment in the context of their proposed uses.”
