Managing diet in infants

20 Jul 2005

Delaying the introduction of cereal-based foods into a child’s diet could help avoid gut problems later in life, according to research at the University of Colorado. Scientists say babies are less likely to develop the coeliac disease if they are kept away from grains until four to six months of age. Their research, which appears in the Journal of the American Medical Association, shows that exposure to gluten in the first three months of life increases the risk of coeliac disease five-fold. The study is based on a sample of more than 1,500 children.
