Research in Poland indicates that an extract of grapefruit seed can reduce the size of stomach ulcers in rats. Scientists at Jagiellonian University have told Digestive Disease Week – a conference of leading digestive experts, being held in Chicago – that the extract has strong antibacterial and antioxidant properties, which calm the gastric tract and aid the healing process. They believe it combines in some way with the enzymes COX-1 and COX-2 to promote healing. Lead researcher Dr Thomas Brzozowski says, “Because grapefruit is acidic in nature, people with ulcers might assume that they should not include the fruit in their diet. However, this research suggests the exact opposite.”
