New research in Australia suggests that breastfeeding may not ensure a healthy childhood weight. Scientists at the University of Western Australia say although 12-month-olds who are still being breastfed are leaner than other babies, the weight difference disappears by the time children are 8 years old. Dr Valerie Burke says the research, published in the US Journal of Pediatrics, indicates no role for breastfeeding in weight control after infancy and up to the age of 8.
