Fruit extract and prostate cancer

29 Sep 2005

It appears that pomegranate extract may prevent prostate cancer or slow its growth. Researchers at the University of Wisconsin in the US point out in Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences (early edition) that the pomegranate?s high levels of polyphenolic compounds mean its juice is very rich in antioxidants. Dr Hasan Mukhtar and his colleagues found that when they incubated prostate cancer cells with low concentrations of pomegranate extract, there was a dose-related inhibition of cell growth, and that mice injected with human prostate cancer cells and fed pomegranate extract showed delayed and inhibited tumour growth.
