Fruit compound protects teeth

28 Nov 2005

Cranberries may help prevent tooth decay and cavities, according to research published in the journal Caries Research. The same compounds help restrict bacteria in the bladder, and contribute to the fruit?s effectiveness against urinary infections, appear to help prevent bacteria from clinging to the teeth. Researchers at the University of Rochester Medical Center in New York say it may ultimately be possible to extract the protective properties and use them in toothpaste or mouthwash. It is unclear however at present quite what it is that makes the protective effect so notable.
