Research results published in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition suggest that older women with diabetes who take high doses of vitamin C for the benefit of their hearts may be doing more harm than good. In a study following nearly 2,000 postmenopausal diabetic women for 15 years scientists at the University of Minnesota have found that those taking heavy [300 mg or more a day] doses of vitamin C supplements are roughly twice as likely as those taking no supplemental vitamin C to die of heart disease or stroke. The researchers say their findings may apply to men as well as to women. Senior author Dr David Jacobs says it is important that additional research is carried out in order to provide a basis for good public health recommendations.
