Food labelling regulation for Australia

29 Nov 2005

The authorities in Australia have announced new regulations for the use of terms including “diet”, “low in fat” and “low sugar” on the labels of food products. All foods for which the manufacturer makes health claims will have to carry a declaration of how much energy is contained in each serving as a percentage of the recommended daily intake. Two types of health claim will be permitted: “general” claims for example that a food is “high in calcium”, or “reduces stomach upsets”; and “high-level” claims, describing an interaction with a serious disease, for example “food low in sodium may reduce risk of hypertension”.
