The Global Report on Birth Defects, published by the American charity March of Dimes, which says eight million babies are born worldwide each year with defects, concludes that France has the lowest incidence rate in the world, and that diet could be the reason. March of Dimes president Jennifer Howse says he problem of birth defects has been ignored by governments despite the availability of simple public health measures which could reduce their incidence.
