Has it all changed on oily fish?

A review by the British Medical Journal concludes that there is no evidence of a clear benefit to health in the consumption of omega-3 fatty acids. Researchers examined the results of 89 studies looking at heart disease, cancer and strokes, and while the balance of evidence suggested omega-3 fats reduce mortality, one large-scale trial came to a contradictory conclusion. Research leader Lee Hooper, of the University of East Anglia says, “This advice [UK guidelines on oily fish] should continue at present but the evidence should be reviewed regularly. It is probably not appropriate to recommend a high intake of omega-3 fats for people who have angina but have not had a myocardial infarction.”
