Researchers in the US say there is a direct link between childhood obesity and the advertising of junk food on television. A team at Harvard School of Public Health and the Children’s Hospital in Boston has found that children who spend more time watching TV are more likely to eat the calorie-dense, low nutrient foods advertised there, and are not simply overweight through the lack of physical activity. Dr Jean Wiecha PhD, a senior research scientist at HSPH and lead author of the research, which is published in the [US] Archives of Pediatric and Adolescent Medicine, says link between viewing time and sugar-sweetened beverages is the strongest of those assessed.
