School milk rule to tackle obesity

25 May 2006

State schools in England will not be permitted to serve whole milk to children after September; the rule will apply to milk served during school lunches and at break times, and to cartons sold in vending machines. The move, approved by the Food Standards Agency, was included in the nutritional standards for schools announced by the Education Secretary last week, and he will almost certainly face demands for a justification of the ban on whole milk during education questions in the Commons today [25 May 2006]. Milk processors and the dairy industry?s representatives have asked Mr Johnson to think again.
