Carbs "have a role in blood fat"

31 May 2006

New research indicates that reducing carbohydrate intake leads to healthier blood fat levels irrespective of whether or not subjects lose weight. A team at Children’s Hospital Oakland Research Institute in the US say men in their study group with the lowest carbohydrate intake showed reductions in harmful triglycerides and LDL cholesterol levels, as well as an increase in the ratio of HDL cholesterol to total cholesterol levels. Dr Ronald Krauss says, however, a reduced-carbohydrate diet needs to be adopted in consultation with a dietician in order to be successful in this way, but he points out that it is much less restrictive than, for example, the Atkins approach.
