A survey by the Trading Standards Institute (TSI) shows that many popular children’s foods vary widely in nutritional value. Some sweets, for example, have hundreds of times more fat then others, while the amount of salt in ready-made meals varies from trace to 6.9g. The organisation says the food industry should standardise content labels in a readily understandable format. TSI spokesman Phil Thomas commends the Food Standards Agency for its ‘traffic light’ initiative, which encourages supermarkets and manufacturers to use a clear nutritional guide on packaging to indicate levels of fat, saturated fat, salt and sugar.
