First proven benefit to prebiotics?

26 Jun 2006

Research in Italy suggests that adding prebiotics to formula feed can help cut the risk of babies developing atopic dermatitis. A team at Milan’s Center for Infant Nutrition, writing up its findings in Archives of Disease in Childhood, says the risk of atopic dermatitis was reduced by more than 50 per cent in the infants fed prebiotics in the study group. The researchers believe this is the first time it has been shown that prebiotics can not only produce favourable changes in the gut flora, but that the changes can lead to a genuine clinical benefit.
