Qualified support for calcium supplementation

Scientists in Australia say it is unlikely that calcium supplements given to healthy children to improve their bone density will prevent broken bones. An analysis by a team at the Menzies Research Institute in Tasmania of19 studies involving nearly 3,000 children, shows that youngsters taking the supplements show a small increase in bone mineral density in the arms but not at the hip or lower spine.
