The Pesticide Residues Committee says nearly a third of food and drink in the UK contains pesticide, while in 1.7 per cent of the things tested the levels were illegally high. Its research shows that levels of pesticide residues in fruit and vegetables destined for schools as part of the “five a day” scheme are broadly similar to those in the general supply chain, but that the effects of missing those items in the diet outweighs concern about health problems caused by pesticides.
