Italian scientists have invented a new diet aid in the form of a pill that swells in the stomach. It contains an absorbent powder that expands to more than 1,000 times its initial size when exposed to water. Prof Luigi Ambrosio, who led the research team, says the key element is cellulose, and so it also has a beneficial effect on the gut.
