Women may reduce their risk of developing high blood pressure if they have a high intake of whole grains, according to scientists at Harvard University. The researchers say middle-aged and older women eating the most whole grains are less likely than those with the lowest intake to develop high blood pressure over a ten-year period. However, the benefit is modest, the difference between the groups being 11 per cent. The team, led by Dr Lu Wang, say in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition that consumption of refined grains by contrast appears to be unrelated to the risk of high blood pressure.
