It appears that maintaining normal zinc concentrations in the blood may help prevent pneumonia in elderly people in nursing homes. Scientists at Tufts University, in the US, say in their study group the people with normal blood zinc concentrations were about 50 per cent less likely than those with low concentrations to develop pneumonia. Their results, published in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition, show that people with normal zinc concentrations are in fact at less risk of death from all causes.
