Research in Spain suggests that women who drink wine in moderate amounts may have reduced inflammation in their blood vessels. Reporting in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition, the researchers say red wine has a particularly marked effect on the level of inflammatory substances. Lead researcher Dr Emilio Sacanella, of the University of Barcelona, and colleagues, observed 35 healthy women who regularly drank amounts of wine over the course of four weeks. They found that overall, the women’s HDL levels rose, while their levels of inflammatory substances, including C-reactive protein, declined.
