Research in France indicates that women, but not men, experience a heart-health benefit from drinking tea. According to Dr Mahmoud Zureik and colleagues at INSERM, older women who drink at least three cups of tea a day are less likely than those drinking less to have plaques in their carotid arteries. The findings are published in Arteriosclerosis, Thrombosis, and Vascular Biology. The INSERM team analysed ultrasound measures of carotid artery plaque in more than 2,500 men and nearly 4,000 women, aged 73 years on average. Plaques were evident in 44 per cent of female non-tea-drinkers, but in only 33.7 per cent of those who reported drinking 3 or more cups per day.
