Seasonings and sweeteners called tastants make help with weight loss, by contribution to a feeling of fullness, according to researchers in the US. Dr Alan Hirsch, of the Smell and Taste Treatment and Research Foundation in Chicago, says the finding makes sense because of the direct association between the olfactory bulb and the brain’s satiety centre. He told the Endocrine Society’s annual meeting in San Francisco that in a six-month study his 1436 subjects had an average weight loss of about 30 pounds whereas members of the control group lost on average only 2 pounds.
