Influence of nutrition in recovery from brain injury

22 Jul 2008

Nutrition in the first days after severe brain injury improves patient survival, according to researchers in the US. Dr Roger Hartl and colleagues at Weill Cornell Medical College in New York say nutrition provided soon after an injury takes place is an “independent predictor of survival”, and point out that after a severe traumatic brain injury the metabolic rate increases, so increasing the demand for calories. Their results appear in the Journal of Neurosurgery.
